Runa Duhkha Nivarana Pooja — What It Is and Who Needs It

2 min read

Runa Duhkha Nivarana Pooja is the most powerful parihara seva offered at Shree Agasthya Mahakshetram, Kannur, Kerala. Thousands of devotees travel to this parihara sthalam specifically for this ritual — seeking relief from debt, hardship, and the karmic burdens that seem impossible to shake no matter how hard they try.

What Is Runa Duhkha Nivarana Pooja?

The word runa means debt, and duhkha means suffering or hardship. Together, Runa Duhkha Nivarana Pooja is a ritual dedicated to removing all forms of debt-related suffering from a devotee's life.

According to the seva description at Agasthya Mahakshetram, this pooja addresses three distinct categories of debt:

1. Financial debts — the burden of loans, borrowings, and persistent monetary hardship that refuses to ease despite effort.

2. Karmic debts to ancestors — unresolved obligations to one's lineage that create recurring problems across generations.

3. The three Vedic debts — Deva Runa (debt to the divine), Rishi Runa (debt to the sages), and Pitru Runa (debt to one's ancestors).

The Sacred Runa Duhkha Nivaran Lingam

The pooja is performed at the sacred Runa Duhkha Nivaran Lingam — a Shivalingam enshrined at Agasthya Mahakshetram specifically for this purpose. Every Monday after Rahu Kala, the temple priests conduct this ritual at this lingam on behalf of devotees.

The Jaladhara offering — a continuous, unbroken stream of water poured over the Shivalingam — is also offered at this lingam. This abhishekam is described as cooling the fierce energy of the deity, purifying the surrounding atmosphere, and bringing relief from fever, illness, and mental agitation.

Why 11 Consecutive Mondays?

The full benefit of the Runa Duhkha Nivarana Pooja comes from completing it for 11 consecutive Mondays. The temple's seva description states that completing this course is believed to:

Clear generational debt, relieve financial hardship, cure persistent illness, and restore prosperity to the devotee's household.

Monday is observed after Rahu Kala — a time considered especially potent for parihara rituals. The timing is not incidental; it is a deliberate aspect of the seva's structure as described by the temple.

Who Is This Pooja For?

Based on what the temple describes as the scope of this pooja, it is suited for devotees experiencing:

Financial hardship that persists despite sincere effort. Recurring debt that keeps returning. Illness that does not respond to treatment. A sense that ancestral karma is creating obstacles in the family. Seeking to clear Pitru Runa, Deva Runa, or Rishi Runa.

This is Agasthya Mahakshetram's signature offering — the seva the temple is most known for, and the primary reason this kshetram is considered a parihara sthalam.

How to Book the Pooja

The temple offers online booking so the pooja can be performed on your behalf even if you cannot travel to Kannur. You can book through the official website at agasthyamahakshetram.com.
