Significance of Agasthya Temple
Ancient Indian cosmology segments time into four grand epochs: Satya Yuga, Treta Yuga, Dwapara Yuga, and Kali Yuga.In Satya Yuga, temples were unnecessary as gods coexisted with humans. In Treta Yuga, their presence diminished, and they descended to Earth only when invoked through sacrifices, appearing in their true forms. In Dwapara Yuga, humans crafted images of these gods, worshipping them at home, while gods occasionally manifested in disguised forms, blessing true devotees. Temples were confined within homes, and there were no common public shrines. However, in Kali Yuga, the darkest age, temples began to be constructed, and icons were installed as public places of worship. Despite gods no longer descending in their true or disguised forms, their presence can still be felt when the temple is built by a skilled architect (Shilpi), the priest conducting the puja possesses a pure mind, and those contributing to the cause have pure intentions. India, with its vast expanse, boasts numerous sacred sites where one could choose to reside to counter the negativity of Kali Yuga. Pullupi Kadavu in Kannur has been chosen as a temple location because many of the trustee members share a karmic link with Agasthya Muni from one of their past births. As this is their final birth, Agasthya feels compelled to guide them on the right path for the construction of the temple. Additionally, this location was chosen because it once housed an ancient Shiva temple that was lost to floods. Failing to build the temple here in due time may lead to havoc, whether in the form of political unrest or natural disasters. To protect this land and its inhabitants, Agasthya has chosen to reside here in the form of both a Matam (Mutt) and a temple, accompanied by his wife, Lopamudra Devi. He will assume the role of Matadhipati for this sacred space. Both the Mutt and the temple (Kshetra) are inseparable, like conjoined twins. Among the deities being installed, aside from the fixed idols of Agasthya and Lopamudra, all others are vibrant. For those who visit this temple and worship Agasthya, he shall manifest in the form of an idol. Simultaneously, when they seek assistance in lawful and righteous matters, he will accompany them to resolve their problems. Visitors to this temple will receive peace (shanti) and teertha as prasadam, along with a sense of solitude (samaadhanam).

Runa Duhkha Nivarana Pooja (Monday Pooja )
In Indian culture, gurus, temples, tapas bhoomis, and teerthas occupy a central place in the spiritual life. The yearning for a happy and prosperous life is a universal human experience. However, poverty can be a major obstacle. Even with good health, knowledge, and education, it can hinder the experience of life's blessings and virtues.
To alleviate the suffering caused by poverty, both material and spiritual, the great sage Vashishtha composed the "Daaridrya Duhkha Dahana Stotram," a powerful mantra. "Daridraya" translates to "poverty," and "dahana" means "to destroy by burning completely." This mantra is believed to be particularly effective in eliminating not just financial hardship but also the negative emotions like anger, ego, and greed that can steal our happiness and peace.
The mantra is said to be especially potent when recited at the Agastya Mahakshetram, a temple housing the "Runa Duhkha Nivaran Lingam" for eleven consecutive Mondays. This special pooja is performed every Monday morning after Rahu Kala (a specific astrological time window). Devotees visiting the temple can participate in person and recite the mantra during this pooja.
For those unable to visit the temple in person, the Agastya Mahakshetram offers the convenience of online pooja bookings. This allows devotees to participate remotely and still reap the benefits of the powerful mantra and the sacred location.
It is believed that devotees who perform this eleven-week pooja with sincerity and devotion may begin to see positive results within the timeframe. Those who achieve results through this pooja are encouraged to share the knowledge of this powerful mantra and the temple's glory with eleven others, thereby accumulating immense merit.

Agasthya Maharishi being a karma and jyana Yogi was busy in meditating, forgetting all about his wife. So Ganapathy had taken the form of crow and made the water to flow out of Agasthya Maharishi’s kamadalam. When Maharishi opened his eyes and saw the crow, he started chasing it; and the crow took the form of a small boy. Agasthya Maharishi caught hold of the boy and beat him on the head. When Ganapathy showed His true form, Agasthya Maharishi repented for his actions and in turn beat his own forehead five times. Hence Ganapathy blessed Maharishi that whoever will pray Him (Ganapathy) in that manner, telling about their problems, especially the ones who have an obstacle in their life, Business people, they will get rid of their problems. If they will tell their problems, He will solve it. Hence, he will be called Varuna Ganapathy here.Once, Lord Shiva went to set fire to Tirupura, without informing Lord Ganapathy. On the way, the wheel of His chariot broke down, and He had to face an obstacle in His work. In the same manner, when Subrahmanium was about to marry Valli, He too did not inform Lord Ganesha, and hence had to face a lot of obstacles. How to Worship Agasthya Muni
Visiting him in the Agasthya Mahakshetram is most powerful in itself; for those who stay nearby. If you will walk 1 km distance to reach the temple (for the ones who have good health), reciting his mantra “Om Agasthyeeshaaya Namah” will suffice. For the ones staying far away; they can sit wherever the place is available and recite his mantra. The place where you sit to meditate should be neat and clean, free from insects and bad odour. The direction is not important. You need to place a white cloth on an even surface and recite the following mantra : “Om Shreem Greem Sadguru Paada Kamalae Janma Karma Paapa Shaap Vimochanaa Sakala Runa Roga Mrityu Ahankaara Dur-vimochanaa Sarva Deva Sakala Siddha Tejas Roopae Maha Jyana Vidhae Kumbha Sambhoota Brahma Nishtaya Dravida Divya Grantha Kaarakaaya Lopamudrambika Sahita Bhagwaan Sri Agasthya Guru-swaminae Namah”. The meaning of this mantra is the one who has understood the vast concept of creation (srushti); life (sthiti) and destruction (laya); I am bowing to the Lotus feet of Guru. Due to my birth sins and curses, I am experiencing many obstacles, which can be cured only through You; all the negatives present in my life – loans; diseases; death; ego – can be removed through You; you are the one who has shown light to many knowledgeable people and Siddha Purusha’s, and posses the entire seed of knowledge; the one who has taken birth through pitch (kumbha); having Brahma knowledge; creator of Dravidian language; the one who wishes for the welfare of human beings and gives and will keep on giving guidance through the holy leaves; I am worshiping you alongwith mother Lopamudra Devi, Lord Agasthya, show us your grace and bless us. You need to recite this mantra daily in the morning and the evening, atleast for 10 minutes. At certain times, if you are not able to recite the mantra with concentration; you need not worry. Few people get the siddhi in few months and rest in few years. There is nothing wrong in it. Realising Agasthya Muni at your own pace is good. By following this system, depending on the deeds done by you, Agasthya Muni will give you darshan in any form; at any place. There are many nerves in our body. Reciting this mantra will rejuvenate all these nerves and we will become enthusiastic.

Agasthya Puranam - Part 1
01.
Agasthya Muni
Janma Masam: Dhanur Janma Nakshatram : Aayilyam Duration of life: 4 Yugas 48 Days. As this is the fourth Yuga, He is still present between us. Meaning of Name Agasthya: The name Agasthya means “mover of mountain”, wherein, ‘Aga’ stands for mountain and ‘sthya’ stands for the person who has command over mountains. STORY BEHIND BIRTH OF AGASTHYA: The creation of Agasthya was meant for the welfare of both God and mankind .Brahma is the creator of all living beings. He is one among the Trimurthi’s. Agasthya is the great grandson of Brahma. Brahma’s son is Marisi. Marisi’s son is Kashyap. Kashyap married Thithi, and twelve children were born to them. Out of these twelve, two were Mithra and Varuna. All these twelve children were working in IndraLoka. It is common that fights takes place between the demons (asura’s) and the Gods (Deva’s) in IndraLoka. The Demons were jealous of the peace and calm that prevailed in Gods region. They tried to kill the Gods. At that time, the Lord of all God’s, Indra, killed the demons and saved the Gods. At this time, a Demon named Vrittasuran, along with Kalakeya, created a lot of trouble to the Gods for a long time, and each time escaped from Indra’s clutches. Indra became frustrated and then came up with a detailed plan to kill both these demons and killed Vrittasuran. But Kalakeya, fearing Indra, left IndraLoka and came to Earth, where human beings resided. Earth was a place which praised the Gods. Kalakeya did not like it. So he killed the people, especially the Sadhu’s, Sanyasi’s and Brahmins and ate them. All these people then started to pray to Lord Vishnu (Sthithikarta), to save them from the clutches of this Demon. Lord Vishnu called for a meeting of all the Gods along with Indra, and told them that they need to somehow kill this Demon and save people. Indra felt bad that due to his fear, the Demon had escaped IndraLoka and was troubling people on Earth. At that time, he ordered the Brahma’s great grandsons, the one who is the owner of water, Varuna, and the one who is the owner of wind, Mithra, to find the demon. Kalakeya came to know about this proceeding. He hid in the Ocean, to escape being caught by their eyes. He started to come out at night time and killed the people. So people again went to Lord Vishnu and prayed to Him to save their lives. Here Mithra and Varuna feared the outrage of Indra, as they had not completed the task assigned to them by Indra. So they prayed to Lord Eeshwaran and meditated by remembering Him. Eeshwaran told them that the only solution to their problem lies in the emptying of the Ocean. So they need to find a person who can drink the entire Ocean. Both Mithra and Varuna were compelled to create such a person, who had the ferocity of Fire, or its equivalent strength/personality. Hence they approached Lord Brahma and told Him their problems and the solution given by Lord Eeshwaran. Lord Brahma, told them that in order to create such a child, a female is required, and showed Urvashi, an Apsare Kannika, for this purpose; and blessed them to have a child of that calibre. Mithra and Varuna were both mesmerised by Urvashi’s beauty. At that time, both released their semen on Kumbham, and Kumbhavataram took birth, equivalent to the ferocity of Fire; along with Vashishtha. The person who took birth from Kumbha, came to be known as Agasthya. They brought him up, with the knowledge and work that needs to be done by him. FEW FACTS Agasthya Darshana Puja: It means worship of Agasthya Star at night, after seeing it. Agasthya Kunda: This is the name of a sacred place in Varanasi. Agasthya Kuta: A sacred mount in South India, where sage Agasthay did penance during his travel. When Surgriva’s soldiers were going in search for Sita Devi, he commanded them to pay homage to Agasthya Muni. This is also called as Agasthya Parvata. Agasthya Malai: An ancient hill, located in Travancore. It is the source of the river Tamraparni. Agasthya Pada: Name of a sacred place in Gaya. Agasthya Pandita: He was a Sanskrit poet and public speaking person, in the Court of Prataparudra Deva of Warangal. He was a poet of great learning, which earned him the name of “Vidyanatha”. Agasthya Samhita: This is Agsthya’s collection of laws.

Indra’s Brahmahatya Dosha and Parihaar
After His birth, Agasthya was waiting for the right time to do his duty. He took the Blessings of Mithra, Varuna and all his Ancestors and descended on Earth. Agasthya was looking like a fire (Jyothi), so fierce. He took the Ocean in his palm and drank it. His stomach swelled due to this and the Ocean became completely drained. This helped Indra to kill Kalakeya. As Agasthya drank the Ocean, drought set in Earth. So a saint called Bhagirathi, brought Ganges and re-filled the Ocean with his Power. After this Agasthya was required to work in Indraloka and got involved in its activities If Indra would have killed Kalakeya in IndraLoka, then it won’t have been considered wrong. But since he came to Earth and killed Kalakeya here, he got the “Brahmahatya Dosham”. So he was not able to sit on his throne and take care of the daily activities. Hence Indra took refuge at Manasarovar and hid in the Lotus Flower. Indra’s wife SachiDevi faced a lot of trouble; Indrasabha got emptied and nobody was there to run it. All the Angels, Apsara’s and Gods too faced a lot of troubles as there was nobody to guide them. At that time, a demon called Naghushan, was waiting for the right opportunity to rule IndraLoka. He prayed to Lord Eeshwaran and meditated. Eeshwaran appeared before him and asked him his wish. He told all his desires and asked the Lord to provide him with the strength and ability to rule IndraLoka. Eeshwaran told him to perform Ashwamedha yajyana’s (yaga) 100 times, and by doing so his wish will be fulfilled. Saying so Lord blessed him. Naghushan got selfish and determined to rule IndraLoka. So he performed the Ashwamedha Yajyna 100 times. Due to this, he got the powers and experience equivalent to rule IndraLoka. He put forth his proposal to rule IndraLoka. So all the Yaksha’s, Gandharva’s and Rishi’s welcomed him, as they didn’t want to see an empty throne. Naghushan became Indra, the Lord of DevaLoka. But since he was basically a demon, he had all wrong thoughts and was interested in all the pleasures. He spent his time with Apsaraas and Kannika’s. But still his thirst for pleasure was not quenched. When he saw Indra’s wife Sachidevi, he expressed his desire to sleep with her and have all the pleasures. Sachidevi postponed his desire day after day. SachiDevi got too much troubled by this, as her husband was not there. So she prayed to Goddess. Goddess appeared and told him the place where Indra was hiding and the reason behind his situation. Sachidevi met Indra and told him about her problem. Indra got interested to rule his Kingdom and protect his wife. So He devised a plan to save her and also to get back his kingdom. As per the plan, Indrani (sachidevi) asked Naghushan to come to her place, but on a condition. Naghushan asked her the condition. She said that Naghushan should come on a palanquin (pallakku), carried by the Rishis. As per Indra’s plan, he knew that the Demon would misuse the Rishis service and get their curse, by which Naghushan will be forced to leave the IndraLoka, and he will be able to get his throne back. Naghushan was very delighted to hear that Sachidevi had finally called him. He became very eager to see her, and in his haste, ordered all the Rishis who were nearby to him to carry him to Indrani’s place. One of the rishis who was carrying the palanquin was Agasthya. Impelled by his desire for Indrani, Naghushan asked the rishis to walk faster. But Agasthya had already the weight of Ocean in his stomach, due to which he could not walk faster, and carried on with his own slow face. Angered by this, Naghushan kicked Agasthya with his feet and ordered him to move fast like a snake (“Sarpa”, Sarpa”). Agasthya also got angered by this and cursed him by saying “Sarpo Bhava”, meaning “You turn into a snake”, due to which Naghushan immediately turned into a python (snake) and fell down from the palanquin. Naghushan repented for his mistake and asked for Maharishi’s forgiveness. He understood his mistake and surrendered to Agasthya and asked for a route to salvation. As he realized his mistake and also accepted it, Maharishi told him that he will get salvation in Pandava vamsha, through the hands of the exceptional (Shreshtha) Dharmaraaj. The python (Naghushan) accepted this, and came to Earth awaiting for the birth of Pandava’s. He crawled from one forest to another for many years in this process. The Pandava’s period came. When they were in forest, Draupadi got attracted to Soundika flowers and asked Bhima to get it for her. Bhima went in search for these flowers, following its fragnance. He found the Soundika Flower, and just as he was about to uproot it, the python (Naghushan) appears and catches hold of him. He (Bhima) calls out to Dharmarajan’s (Yudhishter) help. When Dharmarajan arrives there, and gives his identity, the python releases Bhima, and asks for Dharmarajan’s forgiveness and thus gets salvation. So by teaching a lesson to Naghushan, Indra got his throne back and even his Brahmahatya Dosha got over, Indrani too became happy on having Indra back.

Kubera’s Dosha and Parihaar
When Pandavas were in exile, they were in proximity of Himalaya Mountains. Arjuna gets separated from his brothers, in order to obtain heavenly weapons. He meets Lord Shiva (disguised as Kirata), Yama, Varuna, Kubera and Indra who give him irresistible weapons. In Indra’s heaven, Arjuna resides for 5 years, learning there the art of singing and dancing. Dharmaputra gets tensed, when Arjuna doesn’t return back for long. All the brothers go in search of him, and reach Kuberapuri. At that time, Maniman and his army start fighting with Pandavas. But, Bhima alone handles the fight and kills everyone. At that time, Dharmaputra repents for his younger brother’s iniquity, bowed before Lord Kubera and asked him with politeness, why the power of Gods gave way to the power of man. To which, Lord Kubera replies, “Listen, O son of Kunti. Once, I was invited to attend the chanting of mantras held by the Devas at Kusavati. While on my way to Kusavati, in a chariot, with my attendant Maniman, we came across Sage Agasthya’s cottage, who was doing penance on the banks of River Kalindi. Maniman, spat on Agasthya’s head, which angered the sage. He thus cursed me “Oh Kubera. Your attendant Maniman has insulted me. Therefore, he himself and his army will be killed by a man. You will grieve over their death. But, you will be absolved from this curse, at the sight of the man who killed Maniman and his army.” Thus, it was this curse that brought about the death of Maniman and the army. When I saw Bhima face to face, my curse was revoked.

Indra’s fear and Agasthya’s Yagna
Once Agasthya started a yajna that was to last 12 years. It was attended by many sages, but once it started, devaloka stopped getting rains. There was no harvest, but Agasthya continued to feed the sages who were attending his yajna. The sages were worried that if the rains were delayed, the yajna would suffer. Agasthya assured them that if Indra didn’t make it rain, he himself would assume Indra’s form and fulfill the duties. Indra was frightened on hearing what Agastyya said, and promptly did the needful.

Moksha for Dushpanya
Dushpanya was the youngest son of the king of Pataliputra. He was known to be extremely cruel and had committed several acts of infanticide. The king threw him out of the kingdom. Dushpanya went into the forests and there, drowned Ugraravas’ child. Ugraravas cursed him and as per the curse, Dushpanya too drowned, and his spirit moved about, suffering many ills. Finally the spirit reached Agastya. As per Sethumahatmya, Agastya asked his disciple Sutheeshna to get water from the agnitheertha in the Gandhamadana mountains and sprinkle it on the spirit. As soon as this was done, Dushpanya’s spirit attained moksha.

Importance of Dwadashi Vratam
Once Agasthya stayed as a guest in the palace of the king Bhadrashwa for a week. He praised the queen Kanthimati a lot. The king wanted to know the reason. Agasthya told him that in her previous birth, the queen was a maid to a rich man. Once, during a Dwadashi during heavy rains, he asked her to ensure that none of the lamps in a temple stopped burning during the night. She managed to do it, and was hence born as a queen in her next birth. According to Vayupurana, the king and queen were happy to hear this and started observing the Dwadashi vrata from then.

Agasthya and Rama
It was destined for Dasharatha Chakravarthy (Lord Rama) to remain in exile for a period of 14 years. So he went to the forest with Laxman and Seetha. Seeing the atmosphere of the Maharishi’s ashram, he got attracted and came to that place alongwith Laxman and Seetha. The person who was a Vaishnava, carrying bows and arrows, i.e Rama, alongwith Laxmana and Seetha was welcomed by the sage and treated as a guest. This place is currently called Agasthya-giri or Agasthyapuri in Maharashtra State. He gave discourse (Upadesham) to all the three of them, and also told them that the time was not favorable for them, and that they could face danger in any form during these 14 years. He also noticed that the Bows and arrows which Rama had, were not of much use; and gave him some specialized bows and arrow. He directed them towards Godavari, which was a safe place and asked them to build a hut (Bharnashala), and spend their remaining time there. At that time, a demon called Karan, came to kill Rama. Rama came to know about this attack, and attacked the demon with the bows and arrows that were present with him. But as they were not of much importance, he could not defeat the demon. So he used the arrows given by Agasthya Maharishi, and killed the demon. In the same manner, taking Rama as a medium, Agasthya Maharishi, created many such situations, to kill many Demons. As an instance for this, sage Vishwamitra came to forest to perform a yajnya for the welfare of Lord Rama, Laxmana, and Seetha. At this time, Agasthya Maharishi was preaching at Dandakaaranyam; and a lady called Suthaka, got the blessings from Brahma to have the strength equivalent to 100 Elephants. She married a demon called Sundan. Due to his vakra buddhi, Sundan started giving trouble to Maharishi’s disciples. Angered by this, Maharishi burnt him to ashes. When Suthaka came to know about this, she destroyed Maharishi’s Ashram, with the strength of 100 Elephants that she possessed. She crushed the infants under her feet. Seeing this Maharishi cursed her and her children to turn into demons. After that they were roaming in the forests and causing destruction. They even tried to bring obstacles in Vishwamitra’s yajnya. Seeing this Rama and Laxmana killed these demons. In this manner Rama and Laxmana faced many such situations and fought bravely. At that time, Ravana’s end was nearing. But since Ravana was more powerful than Rama, he found it difficult to defeat Ravana. He was losing his streangth, at which time, he remembered Agasthya Maharishi. Agasthya Maharishi appeared in front of him, and encouraged him to defeat Ravana, and for that purpose told him to recite the “Aditya Hridayam” (prayer of Lord Sun). By reciting this prayer, Rama gathered the strength and ferocity of Sun, and thus was able to defeat Ravana. After defeating Ravana, Rama alongwith Laxmana and Seetha returned to their hometown. When the crowning ceremony was taking place, all the rishis, including Agasthya and me (Narada), were also present. Rama was a little saddened by the fact that after killing so many people, he has to sit on the throne and look after welfare of the people. Seeing his turmoil, Agasthya Maharishi asked him to perform Ashwamedha Yajnya, and thus removed all his fears and filled him with courage and accept his responsibilities and thus made him the King of Ayodhya.
08.
Agasthya and Ravana
In the same manner, once when Rama was a small boy, Ravana was creating a lot of trouble to people in Bharath and was challenging people to come and fight him, if they had strength and courage. But since nobody had the strength or courage to defeat him, most of the people ran away from their places. In order to curb his arrogance, Agasthya Maharishi made a plan. He made an agreement, in which he put forward a competition of Veena to be organized. It was mentioned in this agreement that if Ravana would win, Agasthya Maharishi will surrender and if Ravana would loose, he will not disturb the people henceforth. Ravana, who was a master of many arts, was very proud about his skill, and doubted about his defeat from a small sage. Ravana gave his performance, which was outstanding. It was then Maharishi’s turn. He prayed to Devi and started playing Veena. His performance was so outstanding, that even the ice melted and poured down as shower. At that time, Ravana realized that Agasthya Maharishi has a lot of power, than can be seen from outside and accepted defeat and went back. He did not trouble people for a long time. But after Rama became matured, by his help Agasthya Maharishi killed Ravana.

Agasthya Muni at Rudraprayag
Before starting his journey towards South, Agasthya Muni was on piligrimage to Uttarkhand. Here, he started praying to Shivalingam, Surya and Srividya Devi, in a place near Nagakot, which is located in Agasthyamuni Town of Rudraprayag District. Many Kings from the nearby places such as Bhogajeet, Karmajeet and Sheel became devotees of Agasthya Maharishi; and they constructed a Temple for Agasthya. But after many years, the flood came and destroyed the Temple. After that, Agasthya Maharishi appeared in one person’s dream and told him that he has come to a new place nearby to where there was old Temple. As instructed in the dream, an Agasthya Kund was built, at the new place. This is located about half a kilometer away from the earlier Temple. In the flood, Agasthya Maharishi’s idol flowed away. Hence, currently, his disciple, Bhogajeet’s bronze idol has been placed near Agasthya Kund. There was a priest who were performing puja at the Temple. But after the priest died, the puja at the Temple stopped. At that time, two people from South came on a pilgrimage to Uttarakhand. When they came to know about the Agasthya Muni Temple, they had a desire to visit it. But the local people advised them against going inside the Temple. When asked the reason, they replied that the puja has been stopped from many years and whoever went inside, used to die. So the people from South said that Agasthya Maharishi is worshipped as God in South, and hence they would definitely have the Darshan and went inside, performed the puja and returned back without any harm. So the people asked them to stay back and take care of the puja rituals. They agreed and settled on the peak of mountain and started a small town called “Benji”. These two devotees of Agasthya were actually in search of the Shiva Lingam and wanted the Agasthya Temple to be constructed in a grand manner; so that people across the World would know the power of Agasthya Maharishi. But it could not happen and they died, leaving behind the reigns of the Temple to be taken care in the hands of their off-springs. These two people who went to North India, are none other than the present birth Dineshan and Subrahmanium, of Malayala Theeya Community, who are both karma (duty) and vaak (speech) shuddha. They both have got various spiritual experience and are currently in the Lopamudra Sahita Agasthya Sanmarga Sangham Trustee; but no special designation has been assigned to them. Still, they both are working and putting in more efforts that people having designations. When they will ask the details about the Shiva Linga, through the Trustee members, it shall be revealed; as to where is it present and how it should be brought to the current place.

Agasthya’s entry in South India
When Eeshwaran explained to Agasthya about the situation, he became disappointed and sad that he won’t be able to witness their marriage. Understanding his sadness, Eeshwaran made Agasthya aware about the power of his Tapas (meditation and prayer) and asked him to bring back the Earth to its normal state. He also blessed Agasthya that he will be able to witness their marriage through any part of the World, whenever he wishes. Assured by the words of the Lord, Agasthya took the Blessings of Girija and Eeshwaran, and started his journey Southwards.

Shiva – Parvathy Marriage
Eeshwaran got impressed by the devotion and worship of Himalaya’s daughter, Girija, and asked for her hand in marriage from Himalaya. Himalaya agreed to this, but put forth a condition that the marriage should take place in Himalaya and that all the Lords and people should take part in it. Eeshwaran agreed to this. As per the Indian tradition, marriage doesn’t take place immediately. There are a lot of rituals and customs to be performed. So all the people and Lords assembled on the Himalaya Mountain and took part in the rituals that were being performed. It was only a few days before the marriage. Due to the large gathering, Himalaya could not take the weight and was sinking down. People got scared that the World would come to an end. At the same time, Narada muni, went to Vindhya Parvatham and started praising Himalaya for its beauty and height. Feeling jealous, Vindhya Parvatham also started raising her peaks. Due to the cunning mind of Narada Muni, he knew that if Vindhya was provoked, she will grow. He thought that if Vindhya would grow, then atleast the unevenness would become even and solve the problem. But instead of solving the problem, it added on to it, Due to the rising peaks of Vindhya, the South part got obstructed from light. Narada Muni couldn’t do anything to stop Vindhya from growing. He got tensed and approached Vishnu and Eeshwaran, who were busy in marriage preparations, and told his misdeed. They became worried and started to search for the right person, who had such a great weight and strength, to correct all these three things at the same time, i.e to stop Vindhya’s growth; to bring back light to Southern region and to stop Himalaya from sinking and bringing back the World at an equal position. At that time, Eeshwaran, recalled that there was no other person than Agasthya, as he had drunk the entire Ocean and had great weight, and also the mountains respected his words. So He summoned for Agasthya Maharishi, who had come to witness The Girija Kalyanam. Agasthya considered Eeshwaran to be his Mentor and hence had come with too much of enthusiasm to witness their marriage

The one to whom Vindhya bowed
Here, due to Narada’s provocation, Vindhya was growing at a very fast pace. She also became an obstacle for Agasthya’s journey southward, as without crossing her, the rishi couldn’t reach south. When Agasthya approached the Mountain, with due respect to the rishi, she bowed in front of her. Agasthya told her that he has some work in South, on the instructions of Eeshwaran, and if she would grow, it will cause hindrance in the work assigned, as it will be dark in the South. So he ordered her to remain in a bowed position till the time he returned back.

Vishnu Temple changed to Shiva Temple at Thirukuttralam by Agasthya
Vindhya Parvatam had heard the rage of the rishi and also knew that if the rishi would give a curse, it will be fruitful. So fearing his anger and curse, she agreed to the rishi’s words and also wished to do Southern part all the good from her side. Agasthya reached Thirukuttraalam. He searched for the right place to bring Earth back to its normal position, and after finding that place in Thirukuttralam, he sat there to do tapas. At the temple of Thirukuttralam, they worshiped Lord Vishnu. The Vaishnavites refused to allow Agastya entry, since he was a Shaivite. Agastya immediately changed his appearance to that of a Vaishnavite and entered the temple. As soon as he entered, the idol changed into that of Shiva, and since then it has remained so. A symbolic meaning of this conversion is to show that Vishnu and Shiva are different aspects of the one and same God. As Agasthya Maharishi, sat at this place to do the tapas, the Earth again came back to its normal position, and even the Vindhya Parvatham remained at the same height. The place where Maharishi sat to do tapas, now, waterfalls are coming from that place. The weight of the Ocean which the Maharishi carried in his stomach, he let it out in a slow form, as a waterfall, from the peak, and that is known as “Agasthya Thirtham”.

River Kaveri’s birth
At a place called Brahmagiri, there was a common man named Kaavera, who was profound Shiva Devotee. He got a wish that he should serve human beings in extraordinary ways along with nature. In order to recognize his powers, he started meditation by praying to Lord Shiva. In this meditation process, he became a sage. Lord Shiva appreciated his meditation and appeared before him and asked him to tell his wish. He told all his wishes in front of Lord. Lord said that he will not be able to fulfill his wish to serve the people by becoming one with nature and holiness, but that he will have a daughter, who will be able to do so. He revealed that she will have the sacredness equivalent to that of River Ganges, but in Southern Part and it will be possible only when his daughter will marry Brahma’s great grandson (Agasthya). By the blessings of the Lord, Kaavera had a beautiful daughter. He was satisfied that if not by him, then atleast by the birth of his daughter, he will be able to serve the mankind. He named his daughter as “Kaaveri”. He started searching for Agasthya Maharishi. Through his divine powers, he came to know that Agasthya Maharishi is in South India. The Demons were creating a lot of trouble for Sage, Saints, Brahmin in South India. A demon called Surapadmanabhan, had vigorous force and was living here. When Kaavera expressed his wish to go Southwards, people warned him about the disaster taking place there. But without heeding their words, and taking strong determination, Kaavera took his small daughter and started his journey. At the same time, Agasthya Maharishi was constructing a lot of Subrahmanya Temples on many small Mountains. He became aware about Kaavera’s desire and appeared before him. Kaavera told him that he wants his daughter to be married to Agasthya Maharishi and she should earn a good name and fame for her. But due to his busy schedule, Agasthya Maharishi said that he couldn’t marry Kaaveri at this stage. In the next birth, he (Kaavera) will be born as Vidharbha, and she (Kaaveri) will be his daughter. At that time he (Agasthya) will marry her (Kaaveri).

Agasthya Puranam - Part 2

Agasthya and Krauncha
Also as per Skandapurana, as Agastya crossed Vindhya and was moving south, a rakshasa named Krauncha blocked his progress. Using his powers he created a heavy rain. Agastya took some water from his vessel and sprinkled it on Krauncha. Krauncha immediately became a mountain. Agastya told him that he would be released when Subramanya’s weapon struck him.
03.
Agasthya Maharishi’s stature
Agasthya got happy on hearing this and told his ancestors about this incident (Mithra, Varuna, Brahma). All felt very happy. Eeshwara also appeared before him. Lord asked him what he wanted from life, as he had done so much of selfless duty towards manking and to ask for any wish. To which Maharishi replies, “I was able to understand so much about this Earth because of You. From Giri to Samudra, in all the forms, You are there, being one with them. I do not want anything, apart from seeing Your feet. So kindly make my height so much that I can only view your feet.” Hearing this, the Lord too got pleased, and reduced his height to two and a half feet (21/2 Feet) and gave him some Blessings and instructions to be performed. Lord Shiva said, “Though you have been born in Brahma’s vamsha, you have to go to Earth and serve human kind by imparting them knowledge (arivu), marry LopamudraDevi and lead a Grahastha life and do your duty. (This will be second birth). But since people tend to easily forget what you have done, you will need to take re-birth as a Sanyasi and praise all the things done by you. I am blessing you with all the qualities required for this purpose”.
03.
Birth of Lopamudra Devi
On his way back, he saw some people hanging upside down from a tree. He went near them and asked them the reason for their positions. They told him that they were his ancestors. Since he (Agasthya) did not have any vamsha-vruddhi (children), they were not able to get salvation. So if he will marry at the earliest and move southwards, then all his ancestors will get salvation. Agasthya Maharishi was engrossed in deep thought, after hearing the plight of his ancestors. So he decided to get married. He was searching for the right girl, but could not find anyone eligible enough for him. So he thought of creating a girl of his caliber, on his own. At the same time, King Vidharbha was meditating in forest for a long time for having children. After seeing Agasthya Maharishi, he told him his story, that he was longing for a child of his own to raise. Agasthya Maharishi, remembered his ancestors, and created a girl child, who would be a suitable mate to him. He took the most desirable attributes from differents birds, animals and flowers, in order to create her. He took the eyes of the Doe; grace of Panther; the slenderness of Palm tree; the fragnance of Champak flower; the softness of the feathers on a Swan’s neck – and with these attributes, he fashioned a beautiful girl, and sprinkled the Kaaveri water which was present in his Kamandalum, to give jeeva-shakti to the form and handed over the child to King Vidarbha. He gave all these animals and plants a moksha, and hence created a girl child. He named the child as “Lopamudra”, because the animals, plants and flowers suffered a loss (Lopa), in order to give her form (Mudra). The other names of Lopamudra were Kausitaki and Varaprada. The King became very happy to have the girl child. But Agasthya Maharishi put forward a condition that after the child attains age, she should be given back to Agasthya in marriage. King Vidharbha agreed to this. He brought the child to his kingdom, and raised her with all the luxuries and joys of the Palace. Lopamudra grew into a beautiful girl, possessing all the different types of skills and knowledge. She grew quickly and attained the age of marriage. At that time, the King decided to marry her. But he remembered Maharashi’s words, and was worried how to hand over his beautiful daughter to a dwarf person, who lived on begging.
04.
End of Demons Ilvala and Vatapi by Agasthya
Lopamudra agreed to this and they began their journey southwards. They reached a place called Badami. In this place, there was no one who performed the puja’s or did any homams. People were afraid to worship any God. Agasthya Maharishi found out that the King called Ilvala, had more profits than expenses. He was a demon by birth. He and his brother, Vathapi, were ruling the Kingdom. Agasthya asked the people the reason behind their fears and they told him the story of Ilvala and his brother, Vathapi. Vathapi had got a blessing from Brahma that whenever anybody would cut him into pieces, he will again be brought back to normal self when called out his name and again join back to a normal self. Taking advantage of this situation, Ilvala would invite saints brahmins and sanyasi’s to his Palace and offer them delicious food, which actually was Vathapi being served. After the saints and sages used to eat their hearts fill, Ilvala, used to call out Vathapi to join back. Vathapi would then burst out from the brahmins and sanyasi’s stomach, thereby killing them and join back to his normal self. They used to have a hearty laugh after killing the innocent brahmins and sanyasi’s. Agasthya Maharishi had to approach this King, as he had to fulfil Lopamudra condition, and this was the only Kingdom making more profits than expenditures. Maharishi told Ilvala about his requirement and asked him to help him. Ilvala agreed to it and said that Maharishi could take whatever he liked, but first he should eat the food served by them, to which Maharishi agreed. Ilvala had a hearty laugh to have caught another foolish sage, without realising the Maharishi’s power and knowledge. He turned Vathapi into a sheep and prepared mouth watering food and served Maharishi. Maharishi too had a stomach full of the food served. Seeing Maharishi eat to his heart’s fill, Ilvala thought about the way Maharishi would die, when he will call out his brother’s name. After Maharishi completed eating food, he praised the King about the delicacy of the food and said that whatever he has eaten should get digested (Vathapi Jeerno Bhava). When Ilvala called out to his brother, nothing happened. Ilvala realized Maharishi’s worth and power and gave him all the ornaments required. From that day onwards, there wasn’t any problem for saints, sages, sanyasi’s and Brahmin’s and they continued with their devotion of God.
05.
Marriage of Agasthya and Lopamudra Devi
At that time, Agasthya Maharishi appeared and asked for Lopamudra’s hand in marriage. Feared the sage’s wrath, in case if he refused to give his daughter, the King approached Lopamudra and told her the story behind her birth, thinking that she will refuse the proposal. Lopamudra became very happy to learn the story of her birth and assured the King that she will be happy with Agasthya. But the King was not convinced. So Lopamudra had to tell him the story of his past birth, in which he was Kaavera, who had promised to marry his daughter to Agasthya in this birth. Hearing this, King Vidarbha, agreed for the marriage and even took blessings from Agasthya. At that time, again his ancestors came and told him that they were facing a lot of problems. They reminded him that he should have a child and go to South, in order for them to get salvation. Agasthya Maharishi planned for their first night. At that time, Lopamudra told Agasthya that she had been brought up in a lavish style, and she was used to wearing diamonds and jewels; and only when Agasthya will present her with the ornaments, will she allow him to touch her. Agasthya Maharishi was caught in a dilemma how to fulfill his wife’s wish, as he was pheasant. He told her about his dilemma, as he was not having any worthy jewels, and took alms (bhikshe) for living. But Lopamudra did not hear to any of this and was adamant on her condition. So Agasthya Maharishi went to many Kings, and asked for ornaments in alms. The Kings showed him their profit and loss statement and asked him to take away anything that was in excess. When Maharishi saw the accounts, he found that whatever was the revenue, there was an equivalent expenditure for the welfare of the people by the King. Agasthya Maharishi visited 2-3 Kings in this manner. He visited Shrudharva, Bharatnashva, Tarasadashiv King’s. At each place, he was shown the records and asked to take whatever was in excess. At all the places, he did not find anything to take. He came back to Lopamudra Devi and told her that they will have to go Southwards, in order for Maharishi to fulfill her condition.
06.
Birth of Agasthya’s son
Maharishi presented the ornaments to Lopamudra and she gave her consent for their union. Agastya asked her ” A thousand sons, or a hundred sons each as strong as 10 people, or ten sons each as strong as 100 people, or one son stronger and smarter than a 1000 sons, which do you want?” Lopamudra said she wanted a single son. Agastya blessed her and soon left for the forests, to meditate. Lopamudra gave birth to Dridhasyu, from their union. As soon as he was born, the child began reciting the vedas. By this, all his ancestors wish got fulfilled and they too got salvation.
07.
How Agasthya got umbrella and Chappals from Surya Deva
Once when the great sage accompanied by his beloved royal wife were wandering through forests, she fainted due to the humidity and hot conditions prevailing in the south. She was royal, hence not exposed to hard conditions. By seeing this the great sage became angry and prepared to punish the Sun God with his bow and arrows. Upon seeing this the sun god feared and appeared before Agastya and presented him with umbrella and chappals (foot wear).
08.
Agasthya’s Kamandalam always filled
Due to the ferocity of Surapadmanabhan, the whole of South India was like a draught-affected region. Everybody was waiting for his death, so that they could get good water supply. In order to kill the demon Surapadmanabhan, Lord Indra and all the other Gods reached Sirkali (in Tamilnadu) to kill the demon. Agasthya Maharishi was in a hurry to meet these Lords and hence instructed Kaavera to leave the place alongwith his daughter. Kaavera was happy and relieved to hear that Agasthya will marry his daughter in the next birth. But seeing the plight of the people, Kaaveri got emotional and wanted to serve the people. She started to take the form of water. Seeing this Agasthya Maharishi caught her in his Kamandalum (A jug sort of utensil to hold water), as he had already blessed Kaavera that he will marry his daughter in the next birth. So if Kaaveri will take water form, then it won’t be possible for Maharishi to marry her in the next birth and he won’t be able to keep up with his promise. After Maharishi caught hold of Kaaveri, he started to leave for Sirkali to meet Subrahmanya Swamy. In a few hours time, even Surapadmanabhan’s death was to take place. Here, Kaaveri was getting restless to remain inside the Kamandalum and started praying to all the Lords. She prayed to Lord Ganapathy that atleast she should be able to serve the people in this draught-hit region, by providing them with water. Lord Ganapathy took the form of a crow and pushed the Kamandalum. Water started flowing out with ease and quenched the thirst of Lord Indra and many other people. Agasthya Maharishi got angered and straightened the Kamandalum immediately, stopping the entire water from flowing out. He turned the crow into a small boy and caught hold of him. At that time Lorg Ganapathy transformed himself to Lord Subrahmanya and blessed Agasthya Maharishi, saying that “May your Kumbha always be filled. I did this only to quench the thirst of Lord Indra and many other people. May you succeed in all your ventures and Lord Eeshwaran show his true form (pratyaksha darshanam).” This is the reason, why the water in Kaveri river never dries.

Why we strike our forehead while worshipping Lord Ganapathy
Agasthya Maharishi crossed Badami, Kalasha and came to Kodagu. Seeing the pleasant environment, he sat down to meditate and placed his Kamandalum besides him. The mediatation went on for many days. Lopamudra felt that Maharishi has forgotten her presence and got too much worried by this. She was helpless as she could not do anything being inside the kamandalum. So she prayed to lord Ganapathy. Lord Ganapathy came in the form of a crow and sat on the Kamandalum and started making noise. When Agasthya opened his eyes, and tried to shoo awat the crow, his hand touched the Kamandalum and it fell. River Kaaveri understood it as a signal for her to flow, and she started flowing at a very high speed from that region in a happy mood..Agasthya Maharishi became angry, for water flowing out of kamandalam, and he could not do anything to control it. He saw the crow, and started chasing it. The crow, which was actually a form of Ganapathy turned himself into a small boy, and started running. Agasthya followed him, and caught hold of him, to strike the boy. He beat the boy five times on the head with his knuckles. At that time Lord Ganapathy appeared in his true form. Seeing which, Agasthya Maharishi repented for his mistake and striked his own forehead with his knuckles. Lord Ganapathy stopped him and calmy replied, “Whoever prays to me by touching their knuckles on the forehead, they will be blessed with wisdom.” Also, Ganapathy told him the story of Kaavera, wherein he had wished his daughter to serve the mankind. Agasthya agreed to this, and in this manner, Kaaveri started flowing Southwards, happily serving people and becoming of equal importance as that of River Ganges.

Meeting of Agasthya and King Sadasoman at Agasthya Puttur
Agasthya Maharishi once again became a solitary figure, dedicating himself to serving the people. He traveled to the deep South and arrived at the banks of the River Valapattanam, at Pullupi Kadavu (present-day Agasthya Puttur), where he began meditating peacefully. During this time, a king named Sadasoman was ruling the region. Upon learning about the presence of a holy person in his land, the king went to meet Agasthya and requested a discourse. Maharishi told him that he would receive a special powered Jyotirlingam, and after obtaining this Linga, his state would prosper a hundredfold. The king asked how this could be possible, and Maharishi shared the following story: “This place was once extremely hot, and no living being could survive here. At that time, a saint named Sanaka, along with a few other rishis, churned the rays of the sun to reduce its heat. The dust that rose from the Earth during this process was mixed with Amritam, a sweet nectar. Sanaka formed three special powered Lingams from this mixture and handed them over to Brahma. After worshipping them for many years, Brahma gave them to Parvati. Parvati knew that if these Lingams reached Earth, they would bring great fortune and knowledge to the people. So she waited for the right individuals to come forward so that she could give the Lingams to them. In the Treta Yuga, there was a king named Maanadhatha. His region was suffering from a severe drought, and his people were in great distress. The king was helpless and could do nothing to aid them, so he prayed to the goddess. Pleased with his devotion, the goddess presented him with one of the Lingams. However, she stipulated that the Lingam needed to be placed in a location where no death had occurred or any dead body had fallen. After a long and difficult search, he found a small piece of land that met the description, just enough to accommodate a small plate. In Malayalam, 'Thalika' means a plate. It is said that the region came to be known as Taliparamba, meaning the place enough to accommodate a Thalika, following this legend. Maandhatha installed his Shivalingam at this location, but the Lingam eventually disappeared into the Earth. The second person to receive a Lingam was Muchukundan. The goddess gave him the same condition. He also searched for such a place and arrived at the same location where Maandhatha had installed the first Lingam. He placed his Lingam above the first, but this Lingam also eventually disappeared into the Earth.” After sharing this story, Maharishi said that the goddess was pleased with King Sadasoman's duty and devotion to his people and would present him with the third Lingam. Hearing this, the king became worried that his Lingam might also disappear into the Earth, making it difficult to serve his people. Maharishi reassured him, saying that if the king had any doubts while installing the Lingam, he could call upon Maharishi for help. With that, Maharishi continued teaching his disciples at the ashram. Sadasoman received the Lingam, and following the goddess's instructions and Maharishi's guidelines, he found the place to install the Lingam. He placed it at the same location as the previous two Lingams, but it began to sink. Fearing for his people's well-being, the king called out for Maharishi's help. Realizing that the king could not place the Lingam on his own, Maharishi appeared before him. He instructed the king to light a lamp with cow's ghee. Then he asked him to remember each Rashi (the planetary positions in the horoscope) and take a round of the Lingam. On the thirteenth round, he asked the king to remember the goddess and prostrate. When the king was about to complete his prostration, the Lingam became firmly fixed in the ground. The king then constructed a temple and also designated a place for Kumbhodhara as a mark of respect for Maharishi, who had given him so much guidance.

River Kaveri’s entry in South
At that time, in the Dravid region (South India), there was widespread violence and people were being tortured. Agasthya Maharishi frequently visited these places, saying that he had many unfinished tasks to complete. Lopamudra, his wife, did not like his frequent absences and told him that he should not leave her alone. Angered by this, Agasthya turned her into water and kept her in his Kamandalum (water vessel). It was then that she realized she was none other than Kaveri. Agasthya Maharishi crossed Badami, Kalasha, and came to Kodagu. Finding the environment pleasant, he sat down to meditate and placed his Kamandalum beside him. The meditation went on for many days. Lopamudra felt that Maharishi had forgotten her presence and became very worried. She was helpless, unable to do anything while inside the Kamandalum, so she prayed to Lord Ganapathy. Lord Ganapathy appeared in the form of a crow, sat on the Kamandalum, and started making noise. When Agasthya opened his eyes and tried to shoo away the crow, his hand touched the Kamandalum and it fell. River Kaveri understood this as a signal to flow and began to flow rapidly from that region in a joyful manner.

Agasthya Muni and his works
In the hierarchy of Siddhas who have guided the destinies of nations on our planet Earth for the past 12,000 years of recorded history, the ageless and legendary Siddha Sri Agasthya Maha Muni stands out as the senior-most Guru. He has initiated a galaxy of eminent Gurus and Siddhas through the ages and established and nurtured the ancient Dravidian civilization, which lasted several millennia. He is the author of several Rigvedic hymns in Sanskrit, connected with the Aryan civilization of the North. Agasthya Mahamuni initiates and inspires all other Siddhas. Among the many Siddhas initiated directly by Agasthya Mahamuni, the two most notable are: Thirumoolar, the author of Tirumanthiram. Tiruvalluvar, the author of Tirukkural. Agasthya Muni is the creator of the Dravidian languages. He provided literature for these languages and imparted much wisdom through these texts. His contributions extend to the fields of medicine and astrology, especially Nadi astrology. He worked tirelessly for the development of the Dravidian country and stands as a prime example of service. Serving him is considered the highest form of service, as all service to him indirectly benefits mankind. He created Agasthya Samhita, Aditya Hridayam, and Saraswati Stotram. The Lalitha Sahasranamam was first revealed to the world when it was taught to Agasthya by Hayagriva (a manifestation of Lord Vishnu). Two of his notable disciples were Therayar and Tholkappiar. His works encompass medicine, kaya kalpa, Tamil grammar, and yoga. Some of his disciples include Boganathar, Babaji, Thiruvalluvar, and Macchamuni. He attained samadhi at Ananthasayana, Thiruvananthapuram; Paapanasam; and Kumbheshwar at Kumbakonam after completing parts of his social work. Each time he took samadhi, it was to complete a given task. To date, he has taken three different bodies. On the day of the temple pratishta, he will give darshana along with his wife, Lopamudra Devi, at this place. Whatever you ask with pure devotion and knowledge, your wishes will be granted. This place will become famous as a parihara sthalam (a place for remedy).

Agasthya Star
Agastya is also the Indian astronomical name of the star of Canopus, which is the second brightest star in the night sky. It is said to be the 'cleanser of waters', since its rising coincides with the calming of the waters of the Indian Ocean. If sage Agastya was the first to cross the Vindhyas from the north, he would have been the first northerner to see the star. Hence the star has been named after him.

Agasthya in different Yuga’s
The available historical evidence referring to Dravidian civilization commences with the records from Tamil literary writings during the past 12,000 years; which have been divided by the Historians into three periods, called the First Sangam period from 9600 BC to 5200 BC, spanning the Satya and the Treta Yuga’s; the Second Sangam period from 5200 BC to 1500 BC, spanning the Treta and Dwapara Yuga’s; and the Thrid Sangam period from 1500 BC to 600 AD spanning the Dwapara and the Kaliyuga. Each of these four Yuga’s has to complete the descending arc of 12,000 years and then the ascending arc of 12,000 years. As per it, we are now present in the ascending arc of Kaliyuga, lasting from 600 BC to 1800 AD. The First Sangam, which was founded and nurtered by Agasthya Mahamuni, lasted for 4,400 years; and had its center in the city of Dakshina Madura, in the Continent of Lemuria. The Second Sangam, which was also established under the patronage of Agasthya Mahamuni, lasted for 3,700 years; and had its center in the city of Kavatpuram, in the Continent of Lemuria. This was the period after the records in the city of Dakshina Madura had gone under the waters, The Thrid Sangam, also sponsored by Agasthya Mahamuni, lasted for 1,800 years; and had its center in the Uttara Madura; which is currently the modern city of Madurai. It lays on the North of the earlier centers, after the whole of the Lemurian continent had gone under water. After the Continent of Lemuria, started going under the waters, Agasthya Mahamuni guided the Dravidians residing there to migrate to other places such as Java, Cambodia, Central and South America.

Gajendra Moksha
With the intension of service (seva), he went to Pandya State (Present Madhurai and Kerela). There were many Vishnu Temples in this region. He went to meet the King and impart him knowledge about Lord Shiva and encourage him to build Shiva Temples and to double the glory and beauty of that place. The King who was ruling at that time, was called Indrayunma, who was a firm Devotee of Lord Vishnu. Agasthya went to his Palace (Aramana). The guard at the gates informed the King about Maharishi’s arrival, and described him as a devotee of Lord Shiva. The King did not respect the Shiva Devotees and also did not believe in Him. So the ignorant King, who was not aware about Maharishi’s strength and power, arrogantly said, “I have the power of Hundred Elephants. I know what is to be done. I do not have the time to waste on a petty pheasant. Whoever has come to meet me, needs to wait.” Saying so, he asked the guards to make Maharishi wait outside. Maharishi waited for a long time outside the Palace, but did not get the summons to come inside. Maharishi was pained by the treatment given to him, and in order to teach the arrogant King a lesson, he cursed him to become a Black Elephant (“Gajendro Bhava”). When the King turned into an Elephant, he immediately realized his mistake and ran outside to ask for Maharishi’s forgiveness. He prostrated before Maharishi and asked forgiveness for his ignorance and arrogance and surrendered. As the King had surrendered, Maharishi said that as he had already given the curse, he couldn’t take it back. But he told him a way out of it. He told the King that when all his arrogance will vanish, at that time, Lord Vishnu will himself appear and touch him with his Chakra. This will cause the curse to be removed and he will again gain his normal self. Accepting his mistake, punishment and taking the name of Lord Vishnu, he left the Palace and started venturing in the forest, searching for Lord Vishnu. Due to the rains, a small river had taken birth and was flowing through the forest. One day, a gandharva King named Huhu passed by that way accompanied by a few apsaras. They began frolicking in the stream in front of Devala’s ashram. Devala was angry at Huhu for disturbing him, and cursed him into becoming a crocodile. Huhu lived in that stream. The King (Elephant) became thirsty and in his search for water, reached this place and started to drink water. At that time, the crocodile that was present in the water, bit into the Elephant’s leg. The Elephant cried out loudly in pain. Hearing its cries, many Elephants came forward and tried to free it from the Crocodile’s grip, but the Crocodile had a very firm grip on the Elephant. At that time, without having any other option, the Elephant cried out for Lord Narayana (Vishnu). Lord Narayana appeared and released his Chakra, which in turn touched the Elephant and the Crocodile. They both became normal again. The place where this incident had taken place is at present in Parashuram’s Kshetram, where Chera King had ruled, Kannuva Muni’s had performed tapas (i.e Kannur), KARUNIRA-KADU (Gajendra Moksha place). People believed that there were fierce Elephants residing there and hence they started living at a distant place from this region. But as the time passed, due to fierce heat, the forests caught fire. After that, this region came to be known as “KARUKAADU”, later called as KARKAADU by the local people. After Gajendra got salvation and became normal, he became a Devotee of Agasthya Maharishi and wished to construct a Temple, on the guidelines of Maharishi. But Angels came and informed him that as since he had almost spent most of his life in that region and also got salvation, there was no need to construct a Temple. But as per his wish, some people will come in Kaliyug, and they will build a Seva Kshetram at this place. Hearing this, he finally got salvation from human form.
